Port Elgin · Southampton · Burgoyne · Bruce County
Lake Huron shoreline lots, cottage conversions, and new builds beyond the sewer line: septic here is shaped by sand, water, and small lots.
Much of the built-up core of Port Elgin and Southampton is on municipal services. The septic work is on the edges and in between: rural lots along the concession roads, lakeshore cottages in and around Burgoyne, and newer builds just past the servicing boundary. A lot of the older lakeshore housing began as seasonal cottages on small lots and is now lived in year-round, which puts far more load on systems that were never designed for it.
The soils along this shoreline are often sandy and the water table can sit close to the surface, so setbacks to the lake and to the property line tighten the design quickly. Where a conventional bed will not fit, the answer is usually a raised bed, an advanced-treatment unit, or in the tightest cases a holding tank. A site evaluation tells you which, before you commit to a price.
